Is Xiaomi about to unveil a waterproof Smartphone?

Xiaomi were expected to launch their Mi 5 Smartphone in November but this could be the product that will be unveiled at the Beijing event. The water themed invites may suggest that the Mi 5 will be the Chinese Smartphone makers first waterproof Smartphone.

The Mi 5 which was expected to be released in November will have a Snapdragon 820 chipset and will feature Sense ID, new fingerprint sensing technology which uses ultrasound. The 5.5 inch device will be a thin 5.1 mm and will give 4GB of RAM. A second model, the Mi 5 Plus is expected to be launched at the same time and will be a 6 inch device. An affordable waterproof Smartphone with great features from Xiaomi would give Sony’s Xperia Z series some serious competition.

Of course the event could be the launch of Xiaomi’s smartwatch which has been reported on since May. Xiaomi are the world’s second largest seller of wearable devices behind Fitbit with 24.6% of market share in quarter 1 of 2015. Xiaomi’s popular Mi Band which retails at around $15 was launched in China then released in Asia and is now available in the US, the UK, Germany in France from the website.

Although Xiaomi are China’s largest Smartphone maker and second globally, the company make a range of other products including a smart air purifier and the event could be to launch a new water purifier. Xiaomi have a water treatment company in China and are rumoured to be launching an internet connected water purifier. Xiaomi have already launched a number of smart home products for the Internet of Things (IoT) that will be operated by their smartphones.

So we will have to wait a few more days to see if Xiaomi will unveil a waterproof Smartphone, their first smartwatch or surprise us with something else.
