Twitter Co-Founder Jack Dorsey returns as new CEO

Jack Dorsey founded Twitter in 2006 along with Evan Williams and Biz Stone and served as Twitter’s CEO until he was pushed out in 2008. Dorsey has always maintained his passion for Twitter and has remained active as Chairman and adviser to outgoing Dick Costolo.

Dorsey’s return is a very similar situation to that of Apple founder Steve Jobs who was forced out of Apple but later returned to lead the company to greatness with products such as the iPad and iPhone. Like Steve Jobs, Dorsey is also viewed as a visionary with big ideas and in 2012 Dorsey received the Wall Street Journal’s  “Innovator Of The Year Award For Technology” and in 2008 was named as “one of the top 35 innovators in the world” by MIT Technology Review.

Since leaving Twitter Dorsey has gone on to Co- Found and run Square Inc, a successful mobile payments company. Meanwhile Twitter has had several changes in leadership and suffered slow user growth. Surprisingly Twitter’s revenue for the last quarter of 2014 grew by 97%, topping expectations.

Dorsey gave nothing away when asked if he’d like the CEO position permanently saying “It’s really up to the search committee and they are going to look at internal and external candidates”. He didn’t have much more to say regarding any changes in Twitter's operation saying just “I don’t anticipate and changes in strategy or direction”. Dorsey also confirmed he will continue as CEO of Square.

Dorsey was listed as number 5 in Forbes youngest billionaires in 2012. With a net worth of $1.1 billion mostly made from his Square start-up.
